A recent German crossover clinical trial investigated the effects of daily consumption of chokeberry (Aronia) juice, which is rich in polyphenols, on adults with pre-diabetes. The study found that drinking this red berry juice for two weeks led to a measurable reduction in peripheral vascular resistance, meaning that blood flowed more easily through the blood vessels. Additionally, participants who consumed the juice preserved more muscle mass during periods of high-intensity physical training compared to those who did not. However, the study did not observe significant changes in blood glucose control or markers of oxidative stress during the 14-day intervention. Pre-diabetes is a condition characterized by blood sugar levels that are higher than normal but not yet in the diabetic range, and interventions that can improve vascular health and muscle maintenance are of interest for this population.
