NASA's Perseverance rover has captured the first visible-light image of an aurora on Mars, marking a significant milestone in planetary science and the study of Martian atmospheric phenomena.

On March 18, 2024, NASA’s Perseverance rover, which has been exploring the surface of Mars since its landing in February 2021, captured the first-ever image of an aurora on Mars using visible light. The image was officially released to the public on May 14, 2025. Auroras on Mars have previously been detected using ultraviolet and other non-visible wavelengths, but this marks the first time such a phenomenon has been observed and documented in visible light from the Martian surface. Auroras occur when charged particles from the solar wind interact with a planet's atmosphere. On Earth, these are commonly seen near the poles as the Northern and Southern Lights. Mars, which lacks a global magnetic field but has localized magnetic regions, can also experience auroras, though they are different in appearance and occurrence compared to those on Earth. This observation by Perseverance provides new insights into Martian atmospheric processes and the interaction between the planet's atmosphere and solar activity. The discovery is expected to contribute to ongoing research about Mars’s atmospheric composition, magnetic anomalies, and the potential for similar phenomena on other planets.
